Our supportive and challenging environment helps young musicians build confidence, creativity, and community through immersive jazz study. The Academy provides year-round instruction, including weekly instrumental and vocal jazz rehearsals. The 2026 camp wrapped on July 17 with the Summer Showcase on the Gem stage. Details for the next camp will be announced here. ## Jazz in the Community Kansas City Jazz Academy students are available for performances throughout the community. From small ensembles to larger student groups, our musicians bring the spirit of jazz to events, celebrations, and educational settings across the region. After attending Bethel College and then finishing graduate studies in both classical performance and jazz at UMKC’s Conservatory, Linscheid started a private studio of his own at the Village Music Academy and joined the faculties of Ottawa University and KCKCC as Adjunct Professor of Trumpet. His students regularly receive statewide recognition in both Kansas and Missouri. As a performer, Linscheid has led his own trio for eight years; played with the Diamond Empire Band, the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, Musical Theatre Heritage, and the Marcus Lewis Big Band; and freelanced widely throughout the Midwest. Raised both personally and musically in Kansas City, Missouri, his musical roots are in, and have evolved from, hip-hop, R&B, gospel, and jazz. Largely self-taught, he received formal education from Scott Anthony and Bobby Watson, both of the University of Missouri–Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music. He was one of Casio’s representatives for the worldwide Make Music Day 2021, and is a multiple-time international beat-battle and music-production showcase champion. He has also directed music for several musicals in the area, including _Ain’t Misbehavin’: The Fats Waller Musical_ and _The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess_. His writing has appeared on the Fox TV show _STAR_, in Jägermeister campaigns, and on CBS Sports Radio. Her professional jazz career began in the nightclubs of Kansas City, MO at age 17. She was mentored by the great Hammond B-3 player Everette DeVan, and cut her big band “teeth” performing with the Vince Bilardo Big Band and the Steve Miller Orchestra. As a jazz educator, Lisa Henry takes the legacy and brilliance of jazz into classrooms and onto college campuses across the globe. Through interactive classroom and assembly programs, vocal clinics, music business workshops, and performance adjudications, her teaching reaches students from preschool age to the university level. He has performed at national venues including 5th Street Dicks, The World Stage, the New York and L.A. Convention Centers, the Shrine Auditorium (Academy Awards), the Rose Bowl, Arrowhead Stadium, The Blue Room, The Gem Theater, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. MusicMan was born in Kansas City with roots from New York and L.A. He attended Tarkio College, Long Beach City College, and Cal State LA, where he studied Music Education, Afro-Cuban/Latin Jazz Performance, Bassoon, Percussion, Piano, Saxophone, and Voice, and studied private vocal pedagogy and theater in Manhattan. He is the founder of the bands Poetry In Motion and Musication, and the music company MusicMan Music Services. He currently teaches at Music & Arts, privately online and in-home, and at the Kansas City Jazz Academy. In 2000, the Wilder family moved to the Kansas City area, where Wilder performs with his own ensembles and as a sideman with various jazz artists and the Kansas City Symphony. He released his own CD “Stretch” in 2013 and has appeared on many CDs by artists including Angela Hagenbach, Duffy Jackson, Mike Metheny, the Westport Art Ensemble, Dan Thomas, the Sons of Brasil, and Stan Kessler. The Roger Wilder Trio appears every Friday at the Majestic Restaurant. Mr. Wilder has served as adjunct jazz professor at the UMKC Conservatory for over 10 years, where he has taught Jazz Piano, Jazz Theory, Jazz Ear Training, and Jazz Small Group. Since 2005 he has hosted his own jazz radio show as “The Jazz Geek” on 90.1 FM KKFI, Fridays from 1 to 3 pm CST. He has maintained a steady stream of groups as leader and is a highly sought-after sideman. His current groups include The Sons of Brasil, Horacescope (the music of Horace Silver), Passport, and The Stanton Kessler Quartet/trio/duo. He has won several awards over the years, including Musician of the Year (PlasticSax.com), Best Jazz Trumpet (The Pitch), and Favorite Jazz Trumpeter (Jazz Ambassador Magazine). Stanton was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2021. Stanton is also a highly respected educator. He spent 22 years as adjunct jazz faculty at the University of Missouri–Kansas City and has taught jazz theory and improvisation privately for all instruments for 25 years. Some of his former students include Hermon Mehari, Clint Ashlock, Nate Nall, and Nic Weaver. He is currently traveling the region doing clinics, master classes, jazz festivals, and camps, and has been a youth jazz faculty member for 15 years. Stanton received the Duke Ellington Award for excellence in jazz education in 2023, the first given in Kansas City. During his career, Stanton has produced 12 CD projects and has played with such notables as Clark Terry, Paquito D’Rivera, Gary Foster, Karrin Allyson, Steve Cardenas, Kevin Mahogany, Bobby Watson, Kim Park, Matt Otto, Adam Larson, The Matt Catingub Big Band, the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, and more. Matthews has toured and performed at every major jazz festival, theatre, concert hall, and night club all over the world, as well as performing with a who’s who of artists in the music business — starting with the late great Joe Williams, plus Nancy Wilson, Patti Austin, George Benson, Diane Schuur, Johnny Mathis, Joey DeFrancesco, and many more. Matthews’ debut recording _Solo_ was released in 2000, and his second recording _Count on Swingin’_ was released in 2009. When on break from touring with the Basie Orchestra, the guitarist performs with his groups the Saturday Night Trio, Mood Swings, and the B-3 OrganTet.
